BYD to zoom past Tesla as global EV leader in 2025 for the first time

Ultra-fast charging system is a game-changer

BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) and power batteries, is on track to overtake Tesla for the first time in 2025 and become the global leader in EV sales.

The Chinese automaker is expected to capture a 15.7% share of the global EV market this year, driven by its innovative technologies, vertically integrated production model, and strong domestic policy support.

According to a new study by Counterpoint Research, the forecasted milestone marks a significant shift in the EV landscape, with BYD’s expanding global footprint challenging Tesla’s longstanding dominance.

BYD’s success is attributed to its aggressive expansion strategies, technological advancements, and extensive backing from the Chinese government, all of which have positioned the company as a formidable competitor in the electric vehicle market.

A key factor behind BYD’s surge is its recent introduction of an ultra-fast charging battery EV system, which is already setting a new industry benchmark. The system significantly improves charging times and energy efficiency, addressing one of the major concerns for electric vehicle users: charging speed.

The new system includes several cutting-edge features, such as:

  • 1,000V electrical architecture: This enables high-efficiency energy transfer with minimal energy losses.
  • 10C charging rate batteries: Capable of delivering up to 400km of range in just five minutes of charging.
  • Silicon Carbide (SiC) power chips: Enhance the charging process efficiency and improve heat resistance.
  • Blade battery technology: BYD’s proprietary LFP-based Blade battery offers superior safety, durability, and ultra-fast charging capabilities.

BYD’s vertical integration strategy is also a major competitive advantage. Through its subsidiaries, the company controls the production of critical components, including batteries, motors, and electronic systems.

This allows BYD to offer more competitive pricing while maintaining operational efficiency. Moreover, BYD’s expansion into charging infrastructure further strengthens its position in the global EV market, giving the company greater control over the entire electric vehicle ecosystem.

Abhik Mukherjee, Research Analyst at Counterpoint, stated, “BYD’s ultra-fast charging system can provide a range of 400km in just five minutes, setting a new industry standard.”

The BYD system significantly outperforms Tesla’s Supercharger, which provides approximately 275 km of range in 10 minutes. With this technological leap, BYD addresses one of the most significant barriers to EV adoption: charging anxiety.

While BYD is capitalising on its technological innovations, Tesla is facing a series of challenges that could hinder its ability to maintain its lead. The company’s reputation has suffered a setback due to controversial statements made by CEO Elon Musk, particularly in the US and Europe, where sales softened in early 2025.

Geopolitical risks, including escalating trade tensions between the US and China, have further complicated Tesla’s operations. Increased tariffs on Chinese-made EV components and delayed product launches have put additional pressure on Tesla’s supply chain and overall performance.

“Elon Musk’s recent political positioning has hurt Tesla’s public image and potentially impacted its sales in key markets,” said Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research.

“BYD is now seizing the opportunity, and if they continue to deliver on the fast-charging front, it could mark a significant turning point for both BYD and the Chinese BEV story globally.”

BYD produced its millionth electric vehicle (EV), a Denza N7, on August 9, 2023, marking the first time a global automaker reached this milestone.
